What is Command Position for Bed and Desk?

Command position, or also called the power position, is probably one of the most important concepts in feng shui. Command position refers to the fact that the way we position our bed and desk can have a significant impact on our health and well-being, affecting every area of our lives.

There are three keys to having command position:

Place the bed or desk so that you can easily see the door. Psychologically, we cannot fully relax if our back is to the door. We feel vulnerable to surprise and are in a perpetual "fight or flight" mode. Neurologically, our stress hormones are at work, leaving us unable to fully repair and restore our bodies during sleep.

Place the bed or desk so that it's not directly in-line with the doorway. Energy flows through our homes like blood in veins. Since there are no straight lines in nature, energy (aka chi) can be harmful to the body when forced to go in straight lines. Having your bed or desk in line with the door not only can cause distractions (seeing what is going on beyond your space) but can forcefully hit your body, creating undue stress.

Place the headboard along a solid wall. Place the desk so that your back is to a solid wall.  The wall provides your support and security. It has "your back."

Often, I have consultations where the client cannot adhere to all three rules. Bedrooms are typically not designed using feng shui sensibilities. Of these three rules, the third is least important as it can be resolved easily in most cases. If there is a window behind you, drapes can be used to create an illusion of the security and safety a wall would provide.

Any questions or challenging bedrooms you'd like me to review? I'm up for the challenge! Email me some photos or a drawing of your room.
