How to Apply the Feng Shui Bagua Map

One of the tools we use in feng shui is called the Feng Shui Bagua Map (which literally means, eight areas). Each of these areas represent a significant area of lives, including family, career, wealth, and relationships.

Our homes are energetically-connected to our bodies and our lives.

This connection influences us at a profound level. In order to get an understanding of what is going on in our lives, it is often very helpful to apply this Bagua Map over the home’s floor plan to read the energy of the space and it’s effect on us.

The Bagua Map is traditionally an octagon, but we often use a square or rectangle since it’s easier to apply to a floor plan. In this shape, we have a 9th area, which is really the center. This area represents Health, around which everything else in our lives is connected.

The Feng Shui Bagua Map contains the following life areas:

  • Wealth & Prosperity
  • Fame & Reputation
  • Romance & Relationship
  • Children & Creativity
  • Helpful People
  • Career & Life Path
  • Self-Knowledge & Spirituality
  • Family & New Beginnings
  • Health

Feng Shui Bagua MapApplying the Bagua can be very simple or very complex depending on the shape of your home.

There are a few steps:

  1. Sketch the outline of your home looking from a bird’s eye viewpoint. Note where the front door is located.
  2. Section the sketch into 9 equal areas (regardless of rooms in the home).
  3. Use the diagram to determine the positioning of the Bagua. The front entrance should be in one of the following areas (along the bottom of the Map): Self-Knowledge & Spirituality, Career & Life’s Path, or Helpful People.

If your home is roughly a square or rectangular shape, this application should be easy.

You might find that there are areas protruding from the Bagua – these are known as “bonus” areas. You also might find that there are areas “missing” from the Bagua. These might represent areas in your life that you find weakened or challenging. No worries. There are always ways to compensate for missing areas.

If your home is odd-shaped, then you will need to get the assistance of a feng shui consultant.

Because there is an unlimited variety of floor plan designs (for houses and apartments!) applying the Bagua Map is one of the most challenging concepts for new feng shui consultants to learn. But it is also a lot of fun!

You can also apply the Bagua to individuals rooms.

The process is the same as above, except that you make a sketch of the room, note the doorway into the room and apply the Bagua over that room. So that every room in the home has a “Wealth” area, “Romance” area, etc. This can come in handy especially for your bedroom and home office.
